Vitamin K is an essential nutrient: it helps you use the calcium in your body to maintain healthy bones.
“Vitamin K,” the generic name for a family of compounds with a common chemical structure, including phylloquinone (vitamin K1) and a series of menaquinones (vitamin K2). K1 is present primarily in green leafy vegetables, but how about Vitamin K2?
Vitamin K2 is not present in the foods that make up a typical western diet, so it's common for people to be getting less than the recommended daily amount. It is present in natto, a food popular in Japan, and in liver meats and egg yolks.
Recent evidence suggests that vitamin K has potential health benefits far beyond its role in activating coagulation factors. It appears that vitamin K2 (menaquinones) play an important role in optimal bone and cardiovascular health, by allowing certain proteins to be activated.
