Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin and one of the 8 vitamins belonging to the B vitamin family.
Vitamin B12 helps the body convert food into fuel to produce energy, and metabolize fats and proteins. It also assists in the proper functioning of the immune system.
Being B12 deficient can also lead to having anemia – meaning your body does not have enough red blood cells to do their work, transporting oxygen through the organism – and leaving you drained.
Vitamin B12 is naturally found in animal products, including fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, and milk products. However, it is generally not present in plant foods.
It is now known that B12 deficiency is relatively common among people adhering to all types of vegetarian diets, including lacto-ovo-vegetarian, and other population subgroups, such as the elderly.
